The First Ever...Female NBA Head Coach?

Well....maybe.   We are sure betting on it.  Sure...we have long been a "non-fan" of women's

basketball.  College or the WNBA.

Face it....like it or not...it's the truth.  A good high school boys basketball team ...would run a WNBA team off the court. Beat 'em like a drum.

That said...it gives us great pleasure to announce the first ever female head coach of an NBA team.

No...it has not happened yet...but it will.   And soon.  Rebecca Lynn "Becky" Hammon is an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs.   The players respect her.  Her boss...one Gregg Popovich  has given her his blessing.   So much so....he let her be the head coach in the summer league.   And all she did was lead the Spurs to a championship this week.

Becky...we have your back.   We know...sooner than later...you'll get your chance to lead grown men...in the "Association".

Meet Becky:

Dream......a little......Dream

Okay....in the past ....we might have been a tab bit hard on women's basketball....and the Atlanta Dream.

But .......here they are again.   Back in the WNBA Finals....for the 2nd straight year.

Way to go Dream!

You are the much needed light...at the end of an otherwise dark tunnel in Atlanta sports.

We salute you!

Thoughts........On a Rainy Night in Georgia

Cold and Drizzling ..........

In this southern college town......With all due respects to Brook Benton...... A dreary day. Gray.....dark.......Something out of a Stephen King novel.

I don't dare turn on the news...........Lay-offs..........store closings.......bankruptcies.....stockmarket plunges.......recession..........terrible ca
r wrecks........man beats dog with sledge hammer......and on and on and on........

What a world.......what a life . Can we get a good comedy show in here? Now?

Happy Trails........Houston Comets....

This is.......or was a WNBA team.....but not just an average team. The Comets won the championship of the league in 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000. In fact........the won the championship the first four years of the league's existence.......and this is how they are repaid?

Yesterday, the Comets folded..........closed shop. Unable to find sponsers and new ownership. There will be a dispersal draft at a later date of all current non free agent players. We have often ragged on women's basketball........but this is a shame. This would be like the New England Patriots folding in the NFL.

Happy Tr
ails.......Mike Hampton.....

The former Atlanta Braves left handed pitcher has signed a deal to pitch for the Houston Astros. Yes, that Hampton..........he of the million dollar heart..........but a fifty-cent body......By the way..........he must still pass a physical.......to make the deal final. And that may be asking just a little too much for the injury proned Mr. Hampton.

Things......I think..........I'm thinking.......

I voted Tuesday in this run-off election in Georgia.......me and about ten other people.

I filled up my car today..........for $19.95.....Couldn
't even get $20 in the tank.

Today, DirecTV gave me $10 off a month for a year........and added ShowTime and Starz for free. Who says there is no Santa Claus?

Thanksgiving is still........by far........the best holiday of the year. And I am blessed with the best family ........anywhere......any place.

A special birthday wish for my niece..............An
drea........yes, I remembered.......Happy 29th!

Now.........What'll you do for an Encore?

What an opening ........

We all knew Tennessee's Candace Parker was talented and beautiful.....but........

In her first season in the WNBA, Ms. Parker not only won the "Rookie of the Year" award....she was also named the leagues' "Most Valuable Player ". She's got game. Check this out....from WNBA.com:

Things...We Learned From the Weekend

Th0se Chicago teams...........

Weren't that good after all. In the first round of the MLB play-offs, the Cubs were swept away by the L A Dodgers in 3 straight..........and the White Sox were beaten by the Tampa Bay Rays, 3 games to 1.

This was supposed to be the year. The Cubs boasted the best record in the National League. The Sox forced a 1 game play-off on the final day of the regular season.......won that against Minnesota.....only to get routed by the "worst to first" Rays. The Cubs (Lou Piniella is pictured with this "We 're losing again" look) were even more pathetic......The 3 games against the Dodgers? Not even close! It seemed over night, the Cubs forgot how to hit, throw, and catch a baseball.

That "thud" we heard that even made a reading on the Rickter Scale.......was the millions of fans jumping off that Cub bandwagon.

1908 was the last year the "Cubbies" won a World Series......I'm no math major..........but that's 100 years!............Dare we say? Maybe next year?

A Lambeau Leap....and NFL........stuff........

For the second straight visit to Green Bays' storied Lambeau Field, the Atlanta Falcons beat up on the Packers. Who can forget the last time Atlanta went into the land of "Cheese-heads" during the 2003 wild card play-off game..........Led by Michael Vick, the Falcons trounced Green Bay, 27-7.

This time .......led by their rookie quarterback, Matt Ryan (pictured)..........the "birds" again took care of the ball........the......."Pack".......and the game.......to come away with a 27-24 victory.....It was the first road win of the year. At 3-2..............Atlanta trails Carolina (4-1) for second place in the NFL south division.

Speaking of Carolina, are they that good? Or , are the Kansas City Chiefs....that bad? A week after upsetting the division leading Denver Bronc
os......the Chiefs go into Charlotte , and get mauled, 34-0. Head coach Herman Edwards will not last the season.

Same goes for Detroit Lion coach, Rod Marinelli. Marinelli is 10-26 and 0-4 this year as head of the woeful Lions. They have been beaten in 4 consecutive weeks by scores of, 34-21, 48-25, 31-13, and 34-7.......Ouch!

Defending Super Bowl champion, N Y Giants are showing no signs of a letdown. The "G-men" destroyed the over-rated Seattle Sea Hawks, 44-6. It's only week 5.....but there are just 2 undefeated teams, the Giants (4-0) and the Tennessee Titans (5-0).

This Detroit team....can take a bow.....

For the 3rd time in 6 years, the WNBA's Detroit Shock has won the championship. The Shock swept the San Antonio Silver Stars 3 games to none in the best of five series. Coached by former "bad boy", Bill Laimbeer (who won 2 NBA titles with the Pistons) the Shock entered the season as one of the best teams in the league............but lost thier top post player, Cheryl Ford to a season ending knee injury in July. They sputtered briefly.......but came together in the play-offs........and the rest is history.

Detroit Shock.....we salute you!

Vanderbilt........5-0?

Yes ..........it's true. In our only loss in the Friday Picks.......Vandy beat Auburn, 14-13 to go 5-0 for the first time .....since........(we really had to research this).......1943. Known as the lone academic school in the SEC, the Commodores have long been a joke on the football field. Well now......the joke's on us. Revenge of the nerds?

Can't.... Have it .....Both Ways

Yes.......you...WNBA..........

You.....of the slogan, "We got next".

You..........with the ESPN television contract........

Well........"you"........just threw assistant coach and former NBA star Rick Mahorn....under the proverbial bus.

"You"..........suspended Mahorn for two games........He was only trying to be a peace-keeper.

"You " say Mahorn shoved Lisa Leslie to the floor.....I...beg to differ. He came out
onto the floor to restore peace........She rushed him........He.....at 6' 10"........turned.....and .....she fell.

And what came next? According to "you"..... he (Mahorn)........knocked down .......a mother of a child........

Well.....lah dee dah............ Mahorn just happens to have 4 daughters of his own.

But wait.........listen............When an altercation happens ...........in Men's sports.......Do we say, "So and so, hit ........a father .......of three.........No? I think not.

WNBA...........you wanted "next"...........You got it.

You wanted equality......you got it...........

But when the going gets rough............don't pull ...........that female card..........

It's in the game........

"You"...........

Wanted .......next!

Hump Day.......News & Views

The WNBA........has arrived.

Bench clearing brawl....punches thrown.....one player carted off in a wheel chair? A cat fight at The Palace at Auburn Hills in Detroit. You can't buy this much publicity.

Remember girls basketball in the 60's and 70's..........six member teams........only 2 "rovers" were allowed to go over half court. The remaining players stayed on one side.

My...have we grown..........or what?

The Mets are having .......another meltdown..........

Last night the N Y Mets led the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 going into the top of the ninth inning.

The "fighting phils" then scored 6 runs to win the game 8-6. Yes, it's just one game. But this shows the true colors of the Metropolitans ............No heart.

You remember these Mets........The ones that blew an 8 game lead last September.......and missed the play-offs.

Same old Mets.....

Meanwhile..........

The Atlanta Braves..........totally suck! The Braves where limited to 1 hit..........yet again.......in their 4-0 loss to the Florida Marlins last night. Bases loaded, nobody out? No problem for the fish............and no runs for the Bravos..........

Happy trails........Josh Childress.......

He of the big afro has dissed the Atlanta Hawks and signed a multi-year contract to play in Europe.

Again......same old Hawks........

Finally......

Hello "Dolly"..........this hurricane is wreaking havoc along the Texas coast........

I drove through torrential downpours last night in north Atlanta (Lawrenceville)........but not a drop.......in this southern college town.

8/8/8...........as in August 8, 2008...........The Olympics.....Are you ready?

I think the WNBA brawl..........was a good thing.....

Have a nice..........Wednesday.

Melee...........in the WNBA?

Wow...........

And it happened in Detroit.....Surprise, surprise....

Thanks to ESPN and Red Lasso:

A Few things....Learned From the Week-end

After a long 4th of July week-end.....

Here's a few things we all learned.......

Fireworks.......are awesome...........

Whether it is orchestrated by professionals or amateurs......fireworks are very entertaining and fun. Friday night, we just watched our neighbors trying to out do each other. One right after the other....no one backing down. It was an awesome sight.

Something about..........meat on the grill....

The taste..........the flavor.......it doesn't get any better than chicken, fish, sausages........on a grill. That charcoal ..........the mesquite logs........the smoked flavor..........'um 'um good. I grilled......my brother-in-law grilled. And we ate..........and ate.......And ..........man.....it was good!

NASCAR.......is better on the radio........

True.........while driving home Saturday night, we tuned in to the Coke Zero 400 from Daytona......What a treat. If you have never listened to a live NASCAR race, you're missing a treat. 3 to 4 announcers covering the race ............at all four corners of the track. And in pit row. The way they switched back and forth, from announcer to announcer ............was incredible. With all the sound effects........

Watching the final 4 laps (when we finally got home) on TV ........was ......a bit anti-climatic. Do yourselves a favor. The next NASCAR race that's on..........find a radio.....

You will not be disappointed ......

The "Dream" is finally.......a reality.......

Yes .....it's true.......The Atlanta Dream won a basketball game. Some people actually follow this team and it's league. From it's inception, we have been ....just a little rough on this women's basketball team........an expansion team.......etc.

But now........the fact is.....the Dream will not go 0-34..........Atlanta beat the Chicago Sky, 91-84 , for their first win after 17 straight losses. Break out the champaign ...........Stop the movers..... Quit packing...........Hey, we're 1-17!

Seriously though..........the Dream....has won a game. And the Dream has an unbelievable following. I admire the passion. You may well win me over one day........and we can all rendezvous at Philips Arena and watch a game.

Babies.......are indeed.......precious.....

Got to see great nephew this week-end...........My niece gave birth 4 weeks ago to her son. And there we were......disinfected.......surgical masks.......(just kidding)

No pictures though on this blog......the baby has his own web site..........But ........my niece? And her hubby? You guys did good. What a beautiful baby.

Hump Day News & Views

59 days..........

As in 59 days to kick-off. Yes.......it's a fact. In just 59 days, the Georgia football bulldogs will open their 2008-09 season against Georgia Southern between the hedges in Athens.

And.......it couldn't come sooner. Several Georgia players have been in the news lately........from assault charges to bar room brawls to DUI's........Too much down time.

Let the season begin............sooner than later......any news now.......is only going to be bad.

A Sister act?

At this years' Wimbledon.......it sure looks like it. Venus and Serena Williams are again on a collision course to meet in the finals. All of the top 4 seeds are gone. The William sisters are in the semi-finals against beatable foes. Get ready..........Venus versus Serena.....for the Wimbledon championship.

0-16..........and sinking.

Yes........the WNBA Atlanta Dream is 0-16. The worst record ever in the league. This thing stinks.....and it smells too........

Pay what ever it is you have to pay............and get out.....now!

Don't embarrass the league.......or the city of Atlanta anymore. You tried.....it failed.....move on. Fold up the tents......pack up the luggage.......and......be gone.

The Devil made 'em do it.........

We are at the halfway point of the MLB season and low and behold........the Tampa Bay Devil Rays have the best record in all of baseball. Except.......this team is no longer called, the Devil Rays. Tampa has dissed the Devil.......They renamed themselves, simply , the Tampa Bay Rays.

And they are taking the American League by storm........and great pitching, hitting, defense.........The Rays......are a very good baseball team.....and........more importantly..........they dissed..........the Devil.

If it's a Dream.....Wake me up.....Quick!

0-13............

The Atlanta Dream of the WNBA is in it's expansion season. This is their inaugural into the world of professional women's basketball.

Can we please get a "do-over"? This is embarrassing ........

Forget all the feel good stories the WNBA would have you believe.....with all those commercials on ESPN.

This cannot be good. The Dream.....is not a good basketball team........no household name brand stars.....no nothing.......just a punching bag for better WNBA teams.

But .......this is the ATL...........

You gotta come with game!

Note to the league........If you want to maintain any sort of interest in your sport............try making this team........somewhat.......competitive.

0-13?

Pitiful...........

And then some.

Hump Day News........& Views

Welcome Back Kotter.......

For those of you born in the 80's..........you probably have never seen this show......unless as a rerun on Nick at Nite........This is where John Travolta got his start as Vinnie Barbarino and Gabe Kaplan was an up and coming comic.

It seemed much longer, but the show only aired ( on the ABC network) from 1975 to 1979. Who could ever forget the mean, old, and crabby principal, Mr. Woodman? Or the adorable Arnold Horshack (and his laugh). What about Mr. Cool
himself, Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington.....and .....master practical joker, (also our favorite Puerto-Rican Jew) Juan Luis Pedro Philippo DeHuevos Epstein. For obvious reasons........he was just known as, Epstein.

Wait a second!!!!! Did I say, "Welcome back Kotter?"...........My bad. So sorry.

What I meant to say was, "Welcome back Carter"..............

As in Quincy C
arter.......The former quarterback of the University of Georgia / Dallas Cowboys / New York Jets /Montreal Alouettes (CFL) /Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings (AF2)...who snorted and smoked his way out of professional football. The gifted athlete who could not say .....no .....to blow.

Well, Mr. Carter is getting yet another chance. The Arena Football Leagues' Kansas City Brigade signed Carter to a contract Tuesday to again play the quarterback position.

Drug arrests............failed drug tests.......frequenting re-habs .........have haunted Quincy his entire life. At age 30........this maybe his final chance to make something of his life.

Even spending four years in college on a scholarship ( of course) , Mr. Carter never quite found the time to earn a degree......so the only marketable skill he owns.......is throwing an oblong pig-skin covered ball........around a football field.

What a waste.

Welcome back..........D J

This is in contrast to the above story.........Atlanta Falcon backup QB , D. J
. Shockley was cleared by Doctors today to take part in all football-related activities and even ran some sets with the first team offense at today's offseason workouts.

Last year , Shockley tore ligaments in his knee in a preseason game at Buffalo, and missed the entire season.

Listed as the number 3 QB, Shockley will try to make the team. We wish him well.

Five things........I think ....I think..........

1.
It is officially summer in this southern college town........just about time to crank up the old AC.

2. Last night's game between the Lakers and the Spurs was the best so far of this year's playoffs.

3. I think, Danica Patrick..............is a whinny little ........B'............

4. The 0-4 WNBA Atlanta Dream............is turning into a nightmare.

5. I think my body has finally adjusted to this daylight savings time.......it took a couple of months......but ........I think I'm there now.

Happy Hump Day..........

Candace.......Candace....You go Girl!

I rarely get into Womens' basketball..............but..........

I find myself rather infatuated with one Candace Parker. She of the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team. The 22 year old stands 6' 4" and can dunk. And she is very attractive. And she is very smart.

Ms. Parker has announced she will give up her senior year at the school to pursue her WNBA dream. But........she's only giving up a year of basketball eligibility. Candace will graduate at the end of this season.

After leading the Lady Volunteers to their seventh national championship last season, Parker played with the U.S. national team during her summer break as the team earned its 2008 Olympic bid.

"Candace was ready for the pros two years ago," U.S. team coach Anne Donovan said. "I think it's an exciting day. Tennessee's had her long enough."

Parker also earned the women's 2007 John R. Wooden Award.

A uniquely versatile player, she is mainly a forward, but is listed on Tennessee's roster as a forward, center, and guard.

Candace, whose brother Anthony plays for the NBA's Toronto Raptors, is engaged to NBA player Shelden Williams, currently a member of the Sacramento Kings.

We applaud Candace..........and wish her well.

Hump day Ramblings....

After a looooong day.....I'm spent. So......no pictures, images or videos today -- just me -- rambling.

Is Oprah getting fat or what? Just caught a piece of Entertainment Tonight....and it looks like she needs to visit a salad bar or 2.

Atlanta is getting a new WNBA franchise.....not to sound shovenistic......but....who cares? The 32 WNBA fans in Georgia? And what to call this new team? We have enough birds -- Falcons, Hawks, and Thrashers......Could we be getting the Atlanta Buzzards ? No, I think not. Let's go with a music rich Georgia legacy........The Atlanta Soul!

Deal or No Deal is still the stupidest show on TV........How about a challenge.....or at least make the contestants have ....half a brain?

I think it's a shame the way the Yankee brass is playing the Joe Torre situation. Make a decision.... Don't leave the man hanging.

Make that 4 days in a row -- as in T.I. making the front page of the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Michael Vick is being sued by yet another bank.....This time it's Wachovia going after Mike for a million plus. Will this sad saga ever end.
