Accusations piling up for running back King: Tally of arrests increasing (w/documents)

October 12, 2010 by JACOB DEMMITT

It’s never a good season when you’ve had more petitions for arrest warrants in one year than touchdowns. But for Georgia running back Caleb King, it’s just been that kind of year.

Having already dealt with accusations of influencing a witness, King’s Monday morning arrest was just an exclamation tacked onto the end of what had already been a rough start to the 2010 season.

His legal troubles began after a 23-year-old woman accused King of threatening to post “nude pictures and video” of her on the Internet, according to an Athens-Clarke County Police report.

The woman claimed she had lent King $500 on March 6 in order to pay bills.

When she attempted to recuperate the loan in April, “King told [the] victim that he was not going to repay the money, and if she continued bothering him about it, then he would post nude pictures and video of [the] victim on the [I]nternet,” according to the report.

The woman told police she contacted King again on April 27 and informed him that she planned to take legal action if she was not paid. According to the report, King responded by again threatening to post nude pictures and video of her on the Internet. No charges were issued.

According to Clarke County court records, the woman submitted a application for an arrest warrant against King on May 14 under the charge of influencing a witness.

The woman asked the application to be dismissed on June 24. Because the complainant decided she no longer wished to press charges, no legal action was taken against King. The complainant could not be reached for comment.

Less than four months after these legal issues were settled, King was booked into Clarke County Jail for failing to appear in Walton County traffic court.

“On June 20th, he was stopped for speeding and was issued a citation for speeding,” said Chief Deputy Bruce Wright of the Walton County Police Department. “For whatever reason, he chose not to show up to court. So we issued a failure to appear warrant.”

This warrant remained active until King’s brother, Brandon Everett King, 23, was pulled over for driving Georgia defensive end Brandon Wood’s SUV, which did not have a tag light, according to an ACC police report.

Since Brandon King was found to be driving without a license, Caleb King and Wood were called to the scene to move the vehicle.

When Caleb King arrived, officers informed him of his warrants in Walton County. He was then placed under arrest.

A release from the Athletic Association states Coach Mark Richt is aware of the situation and gathering information. Richt didn’t talk to reporters following Monday’s practice, but did address the situation during his weekly radio show.

“Getting a speeding ticket, not paying it and not showing up for a court date is certainly not a very responsible thing, but I can’t say it’s some kind of awful act that we all should just be ashamed of,” Richt said. “All of these young men have to understand they have a responsibility to take care of whatever issue they have.

“If they have a ticket, they need to pay it. If they don’t, they need to show up for the court date. Those things are certainly obvious, and we have to get better at those kinds of things.”
This marks the second time King was placed under arrest for traffic related offenses while at the University.

In 2007, he was arrested and charged with driving on a suspended license and going the wrong way down a one-way road.

With the most recent arrest, King became the 11th Georgia football player arrested in 2010.
The team was awarded the 2010 Fulmer Cup, which uses a point-based system to pinpoint the college football team with the most arrests.

Since being named this year’s winner, linebacker Demetre Baker and King have all kept the arrest total growing.
