Hump Day News & Views

Another Wednesday.....Another "Hump Day".....

Things we are following.......

Here's to you.....Jackie Robinson....

62 years ago..........on this day.......Jackie Robinson became the first ever black baseball player to play in the major leagues......From..... nationalpastime.com:
1947 A year before President Truman desegregated the military, Jackie Robinson debuts for the Dodgers becoming the first black player to participate in a major league game this century. In front of 25,623 Ebbets Field fans, the 28-year old first baseman is hitless in three at-bats, but scores a run in the 5-3 Opening Day victory over the Braves.

Yes.......it has been 62 years.......since Mr. Robinson broke that lily-white color barrier and opened so many doors for Negro and Latin players.

He did it with talent, dignity, and foresight. And today.....God bless Major League Baseball...

For.......finally.......they have done something right. Today, every manager, coach and player.......of all 30 teams.......will wear.......not just a patch.....but the number 42 on their uniforms in recognition of Mr. Robinson......like baseball did two years ago on the 60th anniversary.

We here at 5 on Five feel this should be an annual ritual.....every April 15th.....every team...every player.......should wear that number........42.

Back to school........

Kinda........sorta.........Isiah Thomas named head coach at Florida International

Yes......he is back coaching.....after a disastrous run in the NBA........Isiah has been hired ....again.

Now I have always liked the former Detroit Piston all-star guard.......as a player. But as a GM or coach?

Let us just say..........he .....uh.......uh.....slightly ....underachieved. From the New York Times:

The Knicks went 56-108 in Thomas’s two seasons as coach, and they never had a winning record in his four years as the team president, despite a payroll that annually ranked among the league’s highest.

And........let's not forget that embarrassing sexual harassment law suit.....which cost the Knick organization $11.6 million in a settlement.

But ........this is America.....and we believe in second chances.....so give Isiah some love....and wish him well.

With that said.......we give him .......about 18 months........to f**k it up .......down there in Florida.

Happy trails.......Oscar.....

Oscar De La Hoya has announced he is retiring from boxing........at the tender age of 39.

From the L A Times:

"The Golden Boy's" Hall of Fame-bound career has seen him win 10 world championships in every division from 130 to 160 pounds while facing the elite of the sport including Floyd Mayweather Jr., Julio Cesar Chavez, Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Felix Trinidad, Pernell Whitaker, Ike Quartey, Fernando Vargas, Arturo Gatti, Genaro Hernandez, Jesse James Leija and Hector Camacho Sr. Along the way, De La Hoya has become boxing's undisputed superstar and his acclaimed career and popularity will be remembered for decades to come.

Now.....we've always looked upon him as a pretty boy........but.......he will be missed in the sport of boxing.

5.......short shots.....

Is "Spring"
ever going to get here.......in 2009?

Will the "Hawks" make a splash.....in this years' play-offs?

Can the "Braves" find a decent relief pitcher?

When will "Fox News"......stop their Obama hatin'???

Are they.....still playing .....hockey?

Have a great ........Hump Day.
