Thursday Night .......Football........NFL Style

It's a Thursday night......and the NFL is coming to a ......

DirecTV.......near you!

Ravens-Falcons preview: Flacco and Ryan had similar flight paths

Flacco, Ryan had similar flight paths

While the prime-time game between the Ravens and the Falcons marks their first game against one another, Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan have long been running stride for stride. They were born four months apart. Both started their professional careers with a bang. Flacco and Ryan are two of nine rookie quarterbacks to start an NFL playoff game. Both have produced similar career numbers. Flacco has a 26-14 record with an 85.8 quarterback rating. Ryan has a 26-12 mark with an 85.7 rating. Flacco has completed 61.5 percent of his passes, and Ryan has connected on 60.4 percent of his. They've both thrown 30 interceptions. And both share similar nicknames: Joe Cool vs. Matty Ice.

Things We Learned.......From the Week-end

Beaten.....and outrun........by a girl......

Yes, it happened in Baltimore........at the Preakness Stakes.......at the Pimlico Racetrack. This is the second leg of the three biggest races of thorough bred horse racing in the calender year.

A filly..........a female........a three year old.......dominated her male counter parts. She led from virtually start to finish........holding off Kentucky Derby winner, "Mind that Bird" by a half length.

Her name? Fittingly......"Rachel Alexandra"........

And on this day..........this female.......this filly........the only girl.....out ran........out performed.......out classe
d....every horse in the field.

In the past........I
have been quite critical of Women's sports........particularly basketball....I am not a fan of female announcers........nor do I like women who want to play Men's sports.

That said..........these ........are horses....

They all have 4 legs.......they all look basically the same......."Rachel Alexandra"........just happened to be born........a female.

From the Baltimore Sun:
Female fans cheer for Rachel Alexandra

I love it..........the new face of feminist........everywhere........

A horse!

What's happened..........to these "Dawgs"?

It seemed like only yesterday........we were bragging on the University of Georgia's men's baseball team.......affectionately known as the "Diamond Dawgs".....A month ago, Georgia was ranked number one in the nation..........and in first place in the SEC.

Now........after getting swept.......in South Carolina this week-end, (3 losses to the Gamecocks), these Dawgs have now lost 13 of their last 14 conference games.

After getting off to a stellar start........these guys........can't hit......field.....or pitch.

Baseball is a funny game. I played it........as did my brothers.......It is the only sport in which you can fail........7 out o
f 10 times at the plate.....and still have an above average......batting average of .300...

You can hit the ball.......square on the button.....and hit a line drive ...out.......right at someone.....or.....you can just get a piece of it.....and slice it in no man's land.....for a double.

This is what UGA is g
oing through........time to regroup.....throw away all those headlines......get ready for the post-season....and play some ball.

Monday.......short shorts.....

Happy trails.....Tony Kornheiser....

Gruden to replace Kornheiser on MNF

Kornheiser has quit his gig as a commentator on ESPN's Monday Night Football....Our take? Good riddance....It's about the
game.....not talking heads..

Major League Baseball.......finally gets it...

Earlier start times for postseason baseball on Fox

It's about time.......Fox Sports and MLB have figured out....we folks that live on the east coast..would like to be able to watch a World Series game.....So they have moved up the starts.......45 minutes.......it's a start.

It is May.......isn't it?

In this southern college town.......last night.....the temperature was 47 degrees..........hardly welcomed.....in the deep south. I even turned on the heat....in my car? Global warming?

When?

Have a great Monday........

The Meaning of the Word, "boy"

Webster's definition reads like this:

Boy
Noun
1. A youthful male person; "the baby was a boy"; "she made the boy brush his teeth every night"; "most soldiers are only boys in uniform".
2. A friendly informal reference to a grown man; "he likes to play golf with the boys".
3. A male human offspring; "their son became a famous judge"; "his boy is taller than he is".
4. Offensive term for Black man; "get out of my way boy".

In Monday night's football game between the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens (won by New England, 27-24), a small harmless three-letter word made national headlines. Ravens cornerback Samari Rolle has accused an NFL referee, head lineman Phil McKinnely , of using ........the "b" word in an exchange between the two.
Rolle told the Baltimore Sun that McKinnely repeatedly called him "boy."
"The refs called me a boy," Rolle said after Monday's game. "No. 110 (McKinnely) called me a boy. I will be calling my agent in the morning and sending my complaint."
"I have a wife and three kids," Rolle added. "Don't call me a boy. Don't call me a boy on the field because I said, 'You've never played the game before.'''
Actually, McKinnely played 7 seasons in the NFL.......but let's stick with this "boy" stuff.

In the Military there is a side boy, soldier boy, fly-boy, dough boy, drummer boy and ship's boy.

There are.......houseboys, bellboys, busboys, cabin boys, cabana boys, hall boys, kitchen boys and link boys.

Then .....you have.....altar boy and choir boy. There is the cowboy........best boy, office boy, copy boy , delivery boy, paperboy, pizza boy , errand boy, messenger boy and ball boy. We also have boy bands, boy scouts........we even have "boyz in the hood".

But..........It's when that little three-letter word is used as a singular noun to describe a black man when it gets to be a slur against that individual. In the South, after reconstruction and well into the 1970's, grown black men were often referred to as "boys" by members of the white law enforcement establishment. "Where 'yall boys goin'?" "He's a pretty good 'boy' ".

"Boy"........has long been a disrespectful and degrading term in the black community. It's just amazing it took 2 black men .....on Monday Night Football.....to bring it to light. Growing up , when someone called myself of one of my brothers a "boy" , we had a simple reply, " 'Boy' plays on Tarzan, Cheetah split......call me mister.......or .........don't call me shit".
